Nova Institution for Women
Built by Correction Services Canada, Nova Institution for Women located in Truro NS houses up to 100 Women Inmates and 100 CSC staff. The design criteria called for energy-efficient construction and reduced maintenance. The design of electro-mechanical systems resulted in the selection of ground-sourced heat-pump system for primary heating and cooling, radiant in-floor heating and energy-efficient lighting all controlled from a single Building Automation System. The Owner selected Digicon/BCS using Andover Controls Infinity Automation System.

The Infinity System provides the brains to control over 800 physical points controlling and monitoring 20 boreholes, 30 heat pumps, and 400 zones of space control. As well the system controls and monitors over 300 zones of lighting. All controllers are networked via a campus-style peer-peer network of fully programmable, stand-alone controllers. Unique features such as hand-off-auto switches on all local outputs, local displays and keypads on controllers and DCX250 graphics touch screens allow users extensive interaction and local override capabilities from many locations throughout the 15 acre facility.

The building maintenance staff monitors and controls the system from a powerful SX8000 Graphics workstation. The workstation allows the Building Maintenance Staff to easily "walk-through" their entire facility to monitor and adjust such items as temperature, lighting schedules, pumps and valves. Using a single interface for many tasks reduces the training requirement for Building Maintenance Staff and enhances their capacity to use the system to its fullest potential.

Maritime Northeast Pipelines
Providing an integrated solution was key in being selected as the preferred systems provider for MNE facilities in Atlantic Canada. MNE wanted to utilize a single system to monitor and control HVAC, card access and security in its buildings throughout Atlantic Canada. MNE Pipelines turned to Digicon for a solution.

The system proposed was Andover Controls Continuum Building Automation System. Continuum provides networking and integration capabilities unsurpassed in the industry. MNE buildings utilize an enterprise network (WAN) solution designed on Ethernet TCP/IP that Continuum uses for on-line communications. The systems from Fredericton to New Glascow are always on-line; no dial-up modems are required. From a powerful Cyberstation workstation in Fredericton, access cards are issued to employees and contractors for all areas in all buildings. Users are provided access rights depending on their individual needs.

Turning off all lights and shutting down HVAC when the buildings are vacant achieve energy savings. The owner wanted a "hands-off" system so Digicon configured the system to arm itself and lock-down whenever no staff was/is present in the facility. A voice message is played over the intercom system alerting staff that the building is being secured. Staff can override the arming sequence by displaying their access control card after hearing this warning.

The modular, scalable design of the Continuum system allows MNE Pipelines to add systems (ie: HVAC) and sites as they expand. The small system is the large system! A single, non-proprietary database and hardware and software designed on today's computing industry standards ensure MNE Pipelines investment in secure and preserved for years to come.

1718 Argyle Street Halifax
Owned and managed by Sonco Property Developments Limited, 1718 Argyle Street is one of the finest, most prestigious class A, office buildings in Halifax. A desirable location directly across from City Hall's parade square, 1718 Argyle attracts the most discerning clientele. Sonco understood the importance of making the right decision when making large long-term investments in building infrastructure.

When Sonco Management felt the need to improve security and safety for its tenants, they turned to Digicon for a solution that fit. Sonco has had a long and successful history using Digicon's services, having been completely satisfied with the existing Andover AC8 system installed in 1985. It was natural to select the latest generation system, Andover Continuum, as the system of choice for the new security measures.

The new system provides access control for over 35 doors, monitors 12 camera locations and controls all primary HVAC equipment. >From a single user-interface, Sonco staff regularly checks building comfort conditions, issues access cards and monitors security. A single interface is easy to use even for casual users. The powerful Continuum Cyberstation software manages all access, security, video and HVAC functions. Video events are monitored and recorded digitally for later review using a powerful search function. There are no tapes to change and no events to record manually. The system integrates perfectly with Sonco's internal network. Staff can easily monitor events from any workstation. A user-friendly voice processor VT-1 module allows tenants to activate after-hours HVAC for their area, monitor temperature conditions and make adjustments by dialing the system from any touch-tone telephone and following the pre-recorded menu instructions.
